Lesson Plans
These lesson plans are designed to give children an opportunity to explore the outdoors during the winter on snowshoes. Participants move through the wilderness (or school grounds) developing coordination, balance, cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. A snowshoe adventure can be tailor made to benefit everyone, from the physically challenged student to the athletically gifted. These activities should be integrated with classroom discussions to enhance the sense of ownership/responsibility, and cooperative learning.
Benefits
These lesson plans were designed to help students do the following:
- Develop a respect for the challenge and sense of adventure associated with outdoor education.
- Learn and apply skills and techniques for movement throughout snowy ground.
- Practice care and maintenance of equipment.
- Nurture respect for the environment.
- Develop safety sense by using own individual space, learning and maintaining balance and learning proper dress for outdoor activities.
- Develop an awareness of movement and speed at which the body is traveling.
The concept of using adventure as a means to human growth has become an accepted ideology in education. The goal is to motivate and encourage children into adventurous activities in order for them to confront personal aspects of which they were not previously aware. This development potentially leads to intrapersonal and interpersonal growth.
The lesson plans herein are suggestive and should be altered to fit your particular needs. This list is certainly not exhaustive.
