Orienteering
(Grades 3-8)

Equipment needed:
  • Compasses
  • Pencils and papers
  • Cones
Directions:
Set up five or more numbered markers. In advance, figure out different ways to go through the markers and take a compass reading for each of segment. Give each student or team a compass and see if they can go through the markers and record the marker numbers in the correct order. Assign each child or group a different starting point and course.

Variations:
Hide the markers so that students must depend on the compass to find each new marker. You could also put the markers in plain sight with an established course. Then have student determine the correct compass readings for each segment of the course.
